Σκάλα Μαριών και Ποτός, Θάσος 🇬🇷
Sometimes it takes a few days of a holiday to get round to the place right on your doorstep. Today, after another visit to Skala Marion, we finally made time for Potos Beach: A swim with Mum, a view of the Holy Mountain and a sunset worth staying for.
September is beginning to make itself felt on Thassos. Back at Σκάλα Μαριών (Skala Marion), the water park that occupies a sizeable stretch at one end of the beach was being taken down. With schools across Europe starting back, the island is becoming just a little quieter, leaving a bit more room on the sand. It still feels like summer here and the temperatures are still high; there is simply more space to enjoy it.
We enjoyed being back, but we were keen to leave some time for Ποτός (Potos) too. Despite being our local beach, within walking distance of the apartment, we hadn’t yet spent any time there this holiday. Somehow, we’d kept heading elsewhere.
Perhaps that is the difficulty with spending just a week on the island as part of a two-centre holiday. I’d like more time to relax locally, with no particular plans beyond a swim and something to eat. But I’d also like more time to get in the car and explore further afield. A week never quite seems enough for both!
Today, though, we made time for the beach on our doorstep. It was still lovely and warm in Potos. Mum and I went for a swim before we settled down to watch the sunset. Across the sea, we had a wonderful view of Athos (Άγιο Όρος – the Holy Mountain) on the distant horizon.
You really cannot beat a Greek sunset. There is something about watching it beside the sea, with the smell of food drifting from the beachfront and the prospect of a relaxing evening still ahead. The water catches the light, the sky turns gold and then red, and I find myself wanting to stay a little longer. I particularly love those deep reds. However many sunsets I’ve seen here, they still make me stop and look.
Potos also brought us a reminder of a much earlier holiday. We found a restaurant on the beach that we visited 25 years ago, when I was very young, and have booked a table for tomorrow evening. I don’t remember it, and it has changed a lot since its very basic setup back then. After all this time, we’ll be going back!
