Καταρράκτης Καλαμάρης, Παραλία Βοϊδοκοιλιά & Πύλος

I’ve had a busy day today with quite a bit of driving, but it has been worth it to visit a couple of places I’ve not been to before. I’ve been to the waterfals, been to the beach, and had lunch in Pylos.

After breakfast I set off for the Kalamaris Waterfalls – Καταρράκτης Καλαμάρης. It took a while to find them as they are not well signed from the road, Google maps takes you to the wrong place, and the actual road there is just a dirt track. But I found them eventually. The actual waterfalls are a 15 minute walk from the parking area.

Sight seeing over for the day I went to the beach. I went for Voidokilia (Βοϊδοκοιλιά) Beach. Extremely popular in the summer months, I have never been before as by all accounts it is absolutely heaving. Today it was busy – but I walked to the middle of the beach – beyond where the car park behind the dunes reaches – and found it much quieter. The beach is shaped like the Greek letter Omega (Ω), it is shallow and sandy, and lovely to swim in.

Above the beach is Nestor’s Cave which I walked to following a footpath from the beach. There are great views down to the beach from the cave. Above the cave are the ruins of the Old Navarino Fortress. I think there’s a footpath to there too but I didn’t make it there – I was quite hungry by this time.

Returning to the car I drove in to Pylos (Πύλος), where I stopped for some lunch and something to drink. I tried to walk up to the castle but that was closed (should have known….the reason I didn’t do Methoni today is because the castle there is shut on Tuesdays too).

I got back in the car and drove back to my hotel – it was gone 6 when I got back. I sat outside on a bench above the beach to read a chapter of my book and then had a late siesta before going out to dinner just before 9.

I ate at a taverna overlooking the beach, not too far from the hotel. It seemed a bit quieter in Finikounda tonight. I ate my meal surrounded by cats (6 in total), and I had to fight them off my plate. It was like having breakfast with Sooty….6 of them.

One was particularly persistant and even jumped up on the table, attempting to take my food directly from the plate! Needless to say, I did give them a few bits of chicken. Then instead of fighting me for my food, they fought each other. This left me to eat in peace….apart from the persistant one who sat on the table watching every move I made.

I had a walk around Finikounda and noted that restaurants which were busy last night were very quiet tonight. Perhaps a lot of people have gone home….but it doesn’t feel any quieter apart from that. The bars were quite busy though. Maybe it was because I was slightly later tonight – I’m not sure.

I might stay a bit more local tomorrow – and then do Methoni for my last day on Thursday (but not decided yet). Or perhaps wander up towards Ag. Andreas, where we stayed last time.

Καληνύχτα,
