Returning to Thassos

Ποτός, Θάσος

Today we moved on to the second half of our holiday, on the island of Thassos – the 12th largest island, and the Northernmost major island of Greece.

We realised when we got here, that we have been coming to Thassos for 25 years! 2001 was our first time here – before Greece had adopted the Euro.

After breakfast in Stavros (and sharing much of it with the cats), we got in the car and I drove to the port of Κεραμωτή (Keramoti). That took about an hour and a half – motorway all the way (interrupted frequently by tolls).

On arrival in Keramoti, Mum bought the tickets – then it was time to board the ferry. At this point the ticket inspector checked the ticket, and attached it to the car windscreen (under the wipers); Mum and Dad were told to get out and board on foot – drivers only to stay in the car.

The last time I was on Thassos was when I drove myself, the whole way, in my car from England – I am quite used to getting on and off Greek ferries. Being directed to go down the ramp from the main car deck to the lower deck, didn’t phase me at all. We call this the “Thunderbird” because the ramp pops up out of the deck, muck like the takeoff ramp for Thunderbird 2!

The crossing to Thassos took 45 minutes. Then, we were home once more! (Thassos is a bit like home now, we’ve been coming here so many years).

It was a 50 minute drive from the port – Limenas – Thassos Town – to our accommodation in Ποτός (Potos). Many years ago, while staying across town at a different set of apartments, we found the Makedonia Hotel. We’ve stayed at a neighbouring hotel a few times, but this time we are staying at the Makedonia itself. Nikos, the owner, and his family, have always welcomed us here.

We wandered down to the sea front for dinner and had a lovely dinner; I had a giouvetsi – beef stew with orzo pasta, topped with cheese. Served in a clay pot – It was very tasty, one of my favourite Greek dishes.

I’ve done a lot of driving today so am having an early night.

Καληνύχτα,

Φ.Χ.
