Αστρίς, Θάσος 🇬🇷
The sun felt particularly intense today. It was only when I settled down on the beach that I realised why: there wasn’t a breath of wind. Without even the slightest breeze coming in from the Aegean, there was nothing to take the edge off the heat.
The day began with a trip to the bakery. I returned with rolls for lunch, along with a sausage roll, a ham and cheese slice and some bougatsa for breakfast. Afterwards, we settled into our familiar morning routine beside the pool. Once again, we had the entire place to ourselves.
In the afternoon, we headed to Astris, also known as Astrida, on the southern side of Thassos. Its name is said to mean “village of the stars”, inspired by the exceptionally clear night skies once observed by local people during the annual olive harvest.
There was little chance of thinking about stars beneath today’s powerful sun, though.
We found a patch of sand beside some rocks, close to one of the tavernas. The sea was beautifully calm and clear, but the windless conditions made the beach feel especially hot. I went into the water several times, partly for the pleasure of swimming and partly because it was the quickest way to cool down.
Eventually, I escaped into the nearby taverna for an ice cream. That was the enjoyable reason for going in; the more urgent reason was that I needed to use the loo!
In the evening, we ate at the Hakuna Matata taverna. We all chose souvlaki, which was very good. A simple, satisfying, and very Greek end to the day.
There are now only three days left on Thassos before we leave the island on Thursday and fly home on Friday. We have reached that strange point in a holiday when the days no longer seem to stretch endlessly ahead. Instead, every remaining swim, meal and outing begins to feel a little more precious.
For now, though, another Thassos day is complete: the bakery in the morning, still blue water in the afternoon and souvlaki in the evening.
