Ιππασία: Νέοι Φίλοι – Άλογα και Γάτες

After a couple of cloudy days the sun was shining again once more yesterday. We did a bit of a road trip in the morning before going horse riding in the afternoon. I made new friends, equine and feline.

In the morning we got in the car and drove towards the Αλυκή Λεμεσού – Limassol Salt Lake – the largest inland body of water on the island. Near the lake is the Ιερά Μονή Αγίου Νικολάου των Γατών: The holy monastery of Saint Nicholas of the Cats.

One of the oldest monasteries of Cyprus, the legend says that when the island suffered a drought 1000 cats were shipped over from Persia and Egypt to rid the area of snakes. After being abandoned in the 16th century, in 1983 it was re-established in 1983 by Orthodox nuns. By this time the snakes had taken over again, so even more cats were released to contain the problem. The cats living there today are said to be the descendents of the cats who rid the area of snakes.

I had a guided tour of the monastery from the little black cat by the flowers (photo above) who then followed me everywhere, meowing at me (telling me about the history of the place).

Afterwards we drove to the village of Κολόσσι – Kolossi where there is a medieval castle which dates back to the 13th century. It was interesting to wander around inside, and there are good views from the top down to the sea and of the village.

After lunch Mum and I got in the car and drove to the nearby Blue Sky Stables, where we enjoyed a short trek through the Cypriot countryside, enjoying views of the Πισσούρι – Pissouri, passing the Ancient Water Dang (once the village’s main water source) and the small church of Άγιος Μαυρίκιος – Agios Maurikios.

I enjoyed our short trek; I was riding a lovely Thoroughbred, ex-racing horse. After the ride I gave him a treat which he enjoyed, and also made friends with a lovely young Friesian horse. I was told he bites because he’s young and doesn’t yet have the social skills, but he was okay with me. I think he quite liked me. He gave my hand a good lick and enjoyed a bit of a fuss from me.

In the evening we drove up in to the main village and went to the Hideaway Restaurant, which as its name suggests is hidden away! We had a set menu meze which included dips (tahini, tzatziki, taramosalata), grilled halloumi with lountza (a sort of Cypriot ham/bacon), pork and chicken souvlaki, stifado and chips. It was very good. I enjoyed it.

Just 2 full days left and all day Monday as well before we fly home Monday evening.

Καλό Σαββατοκύριακο!
