I didn’t write anything on Wednesday so a double dose of updates & photos today featuring 2 towns of the Messinia county.
On Wednesday Dad stayed by the pool while Mum and I did a longer trip – We drove to Πύλος (Pylos), to visit the castle there. Once used as a prison until very recently, the central part of the castle is large and very impressive. From the castle there are great sea views all around.
Above: Pylos Castle. The doors around the central part of the castle are the entrances to the prison cells. The castle was used as a prison until 1953, when Greek police handed the castle over to the Archeological Service.
After visiting the castle we drove down in to Pylos itself, parking by the harbour. Pylos is a larger town so this was a great opportunity for visiting one of the tourist shops for souvenir and gift buying. We had a walk around the town square and sat down for lunch.
We drove back towards Ag. Andreas, stopping off at a very good beach near Φοινικούντα (Finikounda). Παραλία Μαυροβούνι (Black Mountain Beach) is called that because of how the hill turns black at sunset, due to the positioning of the Sun. There are sunbeds here but the beach is very long (it is 2.5km – over a mile – in length) and there is plenty of space.
On Thursday we went the other way for a change and drove up to Πεταλίδι (Petalidi). We found a good beach a short walk away from the town square and enjoyed the morning in the Sun. This was followed by lunch at a snack bar nearby, before a walk around the square of Petalidi. Petalidi is a busy hub, but a new road is under construction which means the main coastal road from Messina in to the peninsula will by-pass Petalidi town centre. The road is not yet complete which completely throws the sat nav in my car!
Friday is the last day before trouble arrives, in the form of my sister – my last day of peace and quiet……….
Have a good weekend!
